I hope ...I am enjoying reading your posts Stephen. I hope all of this blogging has not compromised your ability to throw in a line-out. Maybe you can look up a tackling tutorial while you're online?

First off let me say that I am deeply envious of you being in Israel - while being in Strong Island remains the next best thing, it hardly compares to the thrills that you are undoubtedly experiencing. I wanted to comment because I think you're one of the few people in the world who is very informed of the situation in the Middle East and radically prudent about your approach in exploring it. It is for that reason I respect your opinion on the relevant issues and have come to agree with many of them.

One thing, however, that I must disagree with, is your analysis of the West Bank settler as not being the "brightest bulb." His limited response may not have been the most intellectually encompassing, but I think it is vital to understand the context in which such a sharp rejoinder was engendered.

You must understand that the caution with which you address such controversial issues is a luxury that Israelis in general, regardless of their location of settlement, do not possess. His response reflects an ideology resulting from a violent and uncompromising regime that threatens him, his family, and his way of life each and every day. The ultimate reason is survival: all others are philosophical theories.

While on domestic issues I may be staunchly liberal, the fact is Brandeis liberals ARE too idealistic. They criticize the government's foreign policy under the very blanket of freedom that millions of men and women gave their lives to protect.

If you believe in democracy, then you need to prepare for the daunting truth: there are enemies of democracy that will stop at nothing to destroy it. They see it as evil: whether for economic, religious, or personal reasons, their thirst to destroy democracy is unquenchable by negotiation. If Chamberlain's appeasement of the Third Reich did not teach us that, I'm afraid nothing will.

But just so we are clear, I agree with you completely on the Zionist-Palestinian supporter front. Being a Zionist does not mean I am not pro-Palestinian. I just don't think being pro-Palestinian should come at the cost of Israeli lives.
